Lent begins on Ash Wednesday. We will come forward to receive ashes and be directed to take seriously these 40 days to renew, deepen, and reform, as necessary, our faith journey as disciples of Jesus. We are asked to do this in three ways: pray more; take on additional acts of sacrifice or fasting, and to engage in service or charity to others.
I am pleased there is much parish activity this Lent and encourage you to take advantage of them as part of your Lenten practices. Let me provide an overview.
Prayer There will be evening prayer on Mondays (at the Chapel) and Friday (at the Church with the Sant’ Egidio Community at 6:30 p.m. Virginia Hill will lead Stations of the Cross on Fridays after the Noon Mass at the Church and the 5:30 p.m. Mass at the Chapel. We will also put in the bulletin and on the parish website a daily Bible verse taken from the readings of the day and a short comment from me.
Service Each Tuesday, in collaboration with the Sant’ Egidio Community, we will continue to host a meal in the undercroft of the Church and outreach to our friends without homes in the neighborhood. (Volunteers are welcome, but please express your interest beforehand.)
Faith Formation and Parish Community Growth On Thursdays at the Chapel, we will hold parish fellowship sessions led by Fr. Alex, Virginia Buck McDaniel and myself. There will also be a concert of seasonal sacred music after the 5 :00 p.m. Mass on March 22nd, the Sunday before Palm Sunday.
I am enthused that this Lent we will be establishing a Parish Council with a zoom informational session this Thursday, February 19th, and a first meeting in March focused on spirituality and mission.
On Wednesdays of Lent, we continue the Order of Christian Initiation of Adults for 27 adults preparing for the sacraments at Easter. On the 3rd Sunday of Lent at the 10:00 a.m. Mass at the Church we will present the “Our Father,” and on the 5th Sunday of Lent at the 12:00 p.m. Mass we will present the Creed.
While these parish activities hopefully are helpful to you, Lent only deepens our faith if each of us makes a distinct commitment to prayer, sacrifice and service with individual practices targeted to our own situations. Above all, we should never forget to prayer for and inspire each other – especially during Lent. Please do not forget to pray for me. Thank you.
