Joseph Koterski, S.J., professor of philosophy at Fordham University. The Monday lectures will be held in the Undercroft on September 21 and 28, October 5, 19, and 26, and November 2 and 9, from 6:30 to 7:30 pm, followed by a Q&A until 8:00 pm. Admission is $50 for the series or $10 per lecture. Pre-registration is required. Please call (845) 373-8037 to register.

HOLY SEPULCHRE

Bishops and other clergy will lead a Vigil for the Knights and Dames of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre this Friday afternoon. This will replace the customary Friday Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament.

VIANNEY

The Catholic Truth Society of London, publishers to the Holy See, have published a 50-page booklet by Father Rutler on The Curé d’Ars—Saint John Vianney. A limited number of copies are available in the parish office for $5. They may also be ordered from the United Kingdom by e-mail: Orders@CTS-Online.org.UK.

SEMINARIANS

It has been a real joy to have one of our seminarians, Nicholas Fernandez, in the parish this summer, seeing the ins and outs of pastoral life. He has been a splendid help in many ways, especially his serving Mass. He has now returned to Dunwoodie, which has the largest entering class of aspirants for the priesthood in many years. Two other of our seminarians, Peter Heasley and James Platania, spent the summer learning Italian for studies in Rome. They send news that they saw the Holy Father at his summer palace in Castelgandolfo and were given a private tour of the papal gardens where the Pope prays the Rosary every evening and feeds the fish in the lake.

VISITING PRIESTS

We welcome this month to the parish two priests from Australia, who will continue graduate studies in Rome in October. Both are priests of the Archdiocese of Sydney whose archbishop, Cardinal Pell, has offered Mass in our church.

Father Anthony Robbie was the Administrator of the parish of St. Dominic’s at Flemington in the Sydney archdiocese. He holds degrees in Arts and Law from Sydney University and in Theology from the Catholic Institute of Sydney, and the Licentiate in Ecclesiastical History from the Gregorian University in Rome. Since ordination in 1998 Father Robbie has lectured widely on subjects as diverse as Church history, spirituality, apologetics, dogmatic theology, bioethics, and art history. He was chaplain to Sydney University, Spiritual Director of the World Apostolate of Fatima within the Archdiocese of Sydney, and Chaplain of the Australian Catholic Historical Society. He has lectured for the Maronite Adult Formation Centre, the Catholic Adult Education Centre of the Archdiocese of Sydney and the John Paul II Institute for Marriage and the Family.

Father James McCarthy was ordained to the priesthood this year by Cardinal Pell. He studied at the University of Sydney and in Rome. This autumn he returns to Rome to study for a post-graduate degree in theology at the Pontifical Gregorian University. Since ordination, en route to us, he has worked in youth camps sponsored by the Knights of Malta in Lebanon and Spain. He has been published in several Church journals, and is also the founder of a cricket team at the University of Sydney.

DAUGHTERS OF SAINT PAUL

The Daughters of Saint Paul have relocated their bookshop from East 52nd Street to 64 West 38th Street (between Fifth and Sixth Avenues). We welcome Pauline Books and Media to our neighborhood.

CRISIS OF SAINTS

Copies of Father Rutler’s book, A Crisis of Saints: The Call to Heroic Faith in an Unheroic World, are now available in our parish office at $19.95 each. This new edition features a foreword by George Weigel, biographer of Pope John Paul II, and is signed by the author. The book is also available at Amazon and through Crossroad Publishers. Proceeds from our bookshop go to the general needs of the parish.

SECURITY

As a project of our Restoration Campaign, the old security system has been replaced with a computerized system of cameras, which now survey the entire church and entrances throughout the day.

CHILDREN’S RELIGIOUS EDUCATION

—Sacramental programs and ongoing-religious education for children from ages four through high school. Resumes on Tuesday, September 9, at 5:30 pm, in the church undercroft.

—Post-Confirmation classes will be held twice a month on the first and second Tuesdays of the month for children from 8th grade through high school. Begins on Tuesday, October 7, at 5:30 pm, in the conference room.

—Parents’ Club: for those parents interested in learning or relearning what it means to be a Catholic, how to be a Catholic, why to be a Catholic. Meetings will be on the first Tuesdays of the month, beginning on Tuesday, October 7, at 5:30 pm.

ADULT RELIGIOUS EDUCATION (RCIA)

RCIA Class: For people who seek Baptism or Confirmation in the Roman Catholic Church (also welcome is anyone who wants to learn more, Catholic, non-Catholic, or just curious). We will meet in the undercroft of the Church of Our Saviour on Thursday evenings, from 6:30-8:00 pm. Classes will run from September 24 through Easter.

Format: Generally the supervising teacher will make some introductory comments and lead a discussion based on assigned readings. We will often have guest speakers.

Content: The main thrust of our class is captured by St. Irenaeus’s observation that “the glory of God is man fully alive, and the life of man is the vision of God.” We aim for you to understand the core claims of the Roman Catholic Church in terms of their meaning within human experience. We will study the Apostles’ Creed, the Gospels, and the Sacraments, and then use that study as a platform for understanding the Church’s moral teachings, particularly the more controversial ones. Topics covered will include:

  • Sin and Grace
  • Christ’s Incarnation, Crucifixion, and Resurrection
  • The Holy Trinity
  • God Speaking through Beauty
  • Theology of the Body and related teachings on sexuality and marriage
  • The Sacraments, especially Baptism, the Eucharist, and Confession
  • Prayer
  • The Gospels
  • Authority of the Church
  • Culture of Life
  • Freedom, Virtue, and the Ten Commandments

To register: Contact Sim Johnston at Gsimjohnston@cs.com .

PRE-CANA/MARRIAGE PREPARATION
The Church of Our Saviour is pleased to present what has been called the most comprehensive marriage preparation course in New York City. Couples meet for eight Tuesday evenings in a small-group format conducive to in-depth discussion. A flexible program is also available for couples not able to meet on Tuesday nights. For more information, contact Peter McFadden at (646) 341-0848 or at mcfadden@mac.com.

JOYFUL STEWARDSHIP

Do join the increasing number of faithful who are using "ParishPay" for their weekly contributions. It simplifies parish records and your own financial statements. Whatever you give for the work of this parish is appreciated, however great or small. Charitable offerings are part of the spiritual commitment to Christ. For those who do not contribute in other ways, please do remember that a minimum offering on Sunday of at least five or ten dollars makes all the difference in sustaining the life of this parish in the heart of our city.

LITURGIES
In keeping with the provisions of the recent liturgical guidelines of the Holy See, baptisms, weddings, and funerals may be celebrated according the traditional Latin liturgical books or the ordinary rites. Those desiring the “extraordinary form” may indicate this to the Pastor when scheduling the date.

BAPTISM INSTRUCTION
Because of the increased number of baptisms, Father Rutler will conduct monthly classes for parents in small groups. If you are planning a baptism soon, please consult the office for the schedule
